Our only annual competition is back and we want you to join us! Creative Prompt is a participatory, inclusive creativity event!

Open to writers, musicians, and visual artists of all kinds. This year we are doing it “backwards!” Typically, writers submit their written pieces and the artists are tasked with creating a piece based on the written words. This year, we are letting the artists set the stage. Artists must submit a piece of art in any medium on any subject. They will have one month to submit. Then on the same day, writers that have registered, will receive an emailed photograph of the art and then have 30 days to write a piece interpreting the art. The resulting artwork is then displayed alongside the written pieces.

Open to All Area Artists. Join Red Door 104 as we embark on an artistic journey that pushes the boundaries. All written pieces submitted must be created during a specific timeframe and done in response to a the art provided to you. The goal? To gain inspiration from a piece of art and to challenge yourself to think and create in a new way.

Here’s how it works . . . .

Artists:

Artists will need to submit their non-refundable $40.00 entry fee no later than August 1st 2025. You may drop off your pieces at the Red Door 104 Gallery or ship it to 104 N. Main St. Farmville Va. 23901. Art must be received by September 1st. All 2-D pieces that require frames, must be in a black frame with white mat (matting optional) If your piece sells during the exhibit, you will receive a check. Should it not sell, you will be responsible for shipping the piece back. Photo’s of your work will be emailed to all of the writers on September 5th.

Writers:

Writers must register and submit your non-refundable $40 registration fee by August 1st 2025. On September 5th, each writer will receive an email with a photograph of the art piece that is to be their inspiration. You will then have 30 days to complete and submit your written pieces to the gallery. Due date: October 4, 2025.

The original creative writing piece can be a poem, short story or song, previously unpublished. Written pieces must fit onto a single page (Letter 8 1/2 x 11) and typed in 14pt Arial font. Each entry will be reviewed by recognized writing authority. Entries submitted will be judged on originality, subject focus, and literary excellence.  

Pairing:

The creative writer/artist pairing will remain unknown to all participants until the show’s reception. Written works and artworks will be judged separately and prizes will be awarded in both categories.

Terms and Conditions:

Entrance into this exhibition indicates writer’s and artist's acceptance of any and all terms and conditions stated in this or other information regarding this competition. It is agreed that the artist will present selected image(s), matted and framed according to specifications required and stated by the gallery, by the deadline. Any work that does not meet the specifications will not be displayed. Artist(s) and writer(s) affirm that all work submitted is original and does not infringe on copyrighted material. All copyrights remain the property of the originator. It is understood the RED DOOR 104 Gallery shall charge a commission of 35% on all original works displayed and sold during the duration of the exhibition or from the website. We will have unlimited use and display of writing and images on the gallery website and social media sites for the purposes of promotion. Promotional usage of images shall be free of royalty and no extra charge will be sustained by the artist(s) or gallery for said promotional usage. Display of any and all images in exhibition shall be at the discretion of the curator. It is further understood that the Red Door 104 Gallery will not be held responsible for the payment of return postage on any artwork nor will the gallery be held liable for damages sustained during shipping due to mishandling by couriers or improper packaging. The Red Door 104 Gallery will insure the work in exhibition for the duration of the exhibition at no cost to the artist(s).

By paying the non-refundable entry fee, the entrant signifies that he/she has read and understands the above terms and conditions.
